Chapter Nine

She had planned to stay awake, waiting for Eina and Louise, but it was morning before she opened her eyes again. Louise’s bed was empty but rumpled. Margaret heard the murmur of quiet voices and the floor creaking overhead as people walked around. The scent of coffee drifted down, coaxing her out of bed.

“You finally decided to wake up,” Louise greeted her when Margaret came into the kitchen, drawn by the siren call of Eina’s excellent coffee.

“I must have been more tired than I realized.” She poured herself a cup and sat at the table. “How did things go last night?”

“It took awhile, but we got it all done, thank goodness. Monique wanted the obit to focus on how Victor was the grandson of the great and mighty J.P. Pelletier, and on and on, as though it was his obit instead of Victor’s. She was finally shouted down and J.P. just got a mention near the beginning. The rest wasn’t too hard. Victor had led a full life, and there was a lot to say about his sailing and travels, etc. Denise sent it in to the Chronicle Journal, so it should appear this week. The funeral mass will be on Saturday.”

“Who will do the eulogy?”

“No one. It will just be a traditional funeral mass with no eulogies.”

“Really?”

“It’s a relief. This way, with no speeches, or open mic there’s a lot less to argue about.”

“Hmm. That’s true. It’s easier on everyone,” Margaret conceded.

Eina wasn’t convinced. “I don’t know. A funeral is a time when people get to express their feelings and pay tribute to their loved ones.”

Louise shrugged. “Well, in a case like this, when most of the family wasn’t close to Victor, any tributes would have been insincere. This way we can give him a dignified send-off without being phony about it. Besides, it’s one less thing for the family to fight about.”

Margaret nodded and reached for one of the freshly baked muffins set out on a cake plate. “It’s sad that funerals so often bring out the worst in families.”

“Weddings, too. All the family tensions come out at those times,” Eina remarked. She stood up to put her mug in the dishwasher and wipe some crumbs from the counter.

“Wow, this is delicious,” Margaret mumbled through a mouthful of muffin. “What about your evening, Eina? How did it go with your emergency call?”

Eina shook her head. “Oh dear. Belinda got herself in hot water again. She pocketed some Pez candy dispensers at the dollar store and got caught. I had to go down and sweet-talk the store manager. Fortunately, she knows me, so I was able to convince her not to press charges. But Belinda’s been banned from going into that store again. I spent some time afterward talking with Belinda and begging her to make an appointment with a counselor and go back on her meds. She promised she would, but I don’t know whether she’ll stick with it.”

“Why on earth would she steal candy dispensers?”

“Oh, goodness. There’s no reason to any of it.
